Tumblr support for Windows Phone
“Blogging service Tumblr has been on something of a tear in recent months, adding lots of users who are attracted by its simple blogging interface, and the social features wrapped around it. However, it seems some mobile developers are becoming less enthusiastic.
DashBuddy is a Windows Phone app that helps people manage and post to their Tumblr blog from their smartphone. Its developer Steven Pears has posted a disappointed piece – yes, on his Tumblr blog – taking the company to task for its support. Only to quickly receive a response – a markedly apologetic one – from Tumblr’s founder David Karp.
“I understand that you guys are hugely busy, and that in the grand scheme of things API support for community programmers is hardly a priority. We’re all devs here, I don’t think anyone expects constant interaction,” wrote Pears. “But despite that, the release of the new API has been met with a real lack of support. Especially when it was a significant departure from V1.”
He went on to threaten to take his app offline indefinitely due to missing features that he had intended to put in. “I love Tumblr, I think the API is awesome. But either support it or withdraw it.”
Karp’s response is refreshingly direct. “You’re absolutely right — we’ve been letting down our developer community. This is an extremely high-priority for Derek and me, and something that our Engineering team (especially JB) has been pulling extra hours to help with,” he writes.
“We don’t, today, have engineers dedicated to supporting our developer community — something we’re working to change as quickly as possible. You guys have been doing unbelievable work for Tumblr users, and we want to do everything possible to support your efforts. Thank you so much for the thoughtful note. I’m sorry to let you down.””
